The first level can be used to indicate the distinction between the three main groups of regulated articles. The second level, in combination with the botanical name of the plant, if applicable, is necessary to describe the products sufficiently (even without the first level). The third level describes the decree of processing and can only be applied for certain products, whenever applicable. The fourth level describes intended use of the plants of plant products and can be used whenever applicable.

The codes are voluntary and can be used to standardize the description electronically. The first level has a 5-letter code, the second level a 3-letter code and the third and fourth level a 2-letter code.
